As an initiative to create the environment of competitiveness, learning, motivation and connectedness among the college going youth and to bring out insights on organic farming, it’s importance and the benefits, Wandering Souls of Sikkim, an online magazine and youth forum Organized a day long program themed, ‘ Inter College Scholastic Festival’ on 25th February 2018 at SDF Bhawan, Gangtok.
Inter College Scholastic festival had an Elocution Competition on ‘ Sikkim’s tryst with Organic Farming’ and a Quiz Competition at its core. The program also witnessed the motivational talks and words of wisdom from eminent personalities of Sikkim.
12 Colleges from across the State participated in the festival. The participating colleges were:
1. Sikkim Government College, Tadong
2. Namchi Government College, Kamrang
3. Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing
4. Sikkim Government Science College, Chakung
5. Sikkim Government College, Rhenock
6. Government Arts College, Mangshila
7. Sikkim Government Law College
8. Government College, Burtuk
9. ATTC, Bardang
10. SMIT, Majhitar
11. Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, SMU
12. Pakim Palatine College, Pakyong.
Elocution competition on ‘Sikkim tryst with organic farming’ proved to be quite purposeful as it brought good deal of new ideas and revealed experiences of today’s youth with organic farming. Participants from Sikkim Government Science College, Chakung in West Sikkim secured both the top positions in the Elocution Competition judged by Sikkim University Assistant Professor Binod Bhattarai and Wildlife Conservationist & Research Scholar Sunita Khatiwara.
Questions in the Quiz Competition were based on a wide range of topics including General Awareness, Technology, Sikkim etc. Four teams from amongst the 12 participating in the Preliminary Round were selected to battle it out on-stage. The teams selected were from Sikkim Government College, Tadong, Department of Humanities,SMU, ATTC, Bardang & Pakim Palatine College. After an interesting competition on-stage co-hosted by WSOS In-house Quizmasters Pranay Khatiwara and Rishal Pandey Chettri.

Hon’ble Legal Advisor to the Chief Minister of Sikkim and Former Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly K.T Gyaltsen delivered the keynote during the event. He centred his message on importance of our parents, time and education. He shared his words of wisdom filled with energy and experiences. He motivated students to move for holistic development of self through studies and productive activities. He toured the audience through his schooling days and highlighted the importance of incorporating time management and discipline as a habit.

Sikkim University Student’s Union President Lalit Pokhrel Sharma highlighted the issues presented to him by students of different colleges across Sikkim, during his college visits. He asked the government to look over the issues at earliest. He urged the students to venture into territories like politics, leadership and social services along with promoting their speciality.
Pawan Pyakurel of Wandering Souls of Sikkim presented a talk on ‘Importance of learning and growing everyday’ and helped the students gain a broader perspective for their choices and decisions by relating to his experiences about life and career.
Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Up-Adhyaksha, East District Zilla Panchayat Sharmila Chettri advised the students to take the insights gained in the competition to their respective areas and apply them, to take organic farming to next level. She also talked about the importance of educated young minds in promoting organic farming in Sikkim. She said “You all come up with your ideas, suggestions, and talents and we will come up with the platforms to showcase, promote and implement them.”
Cash Prizes to the Winners and Certificates to the participants were presented by the Chief Guest. Souvenirs were presented to the guests and teachers of the participating colleges as a token of appreciation for supporting the initiative.
The programme was also attended by the members of the SDF Student Front, members of WSOS, teachers, students and others.
