Freedom from Open Defecation Week was observed across the state from 9th to 15th August 2017. Likewise, Block Administrative Centre, Pakyong in collaboration with Wandering Souls of Sikkim organized several events to mark the week. Wandering Souls of Sikkim is honoured to be a part of the celebration and is thankful to Block Development Officer, Pakyong Shri Chiran Rizal for giving us this opportunity to collaborate. Day wise report of the events is presented as under:

9th August 2017:

Readying for Bazar Walk

Cadets of Bharat Scouts and Guides, Government Senior Secondary School, Pakyong walked the streets of Pakyong and visited shops and other establishments to see if dustbins and other sanitary facilities are properly maintained. They carried placards and banners to raise awareness about the week amongst the masses.

10th August 2017:

An Inter School Painting Competition was organized at KNP Junior High School, Pakyong Bajar, where 24 students studying in classes 6-8 in 12 schools across Pakyong Block participated. Theme for the painting competition was Swatch Sikkim; Swasth Sikkim. A Panel of Judges comprising of Shri Kamal Dahal, AO, BAC, Pakyong, Shri Sunil Pradhan, PI, ADC (Dev), Pakyong and Pranay Khatiwara of Wandering Souls of Sikkim was formed by the Block Development Officer Shri Chiran Rizal to evaluate the paintings and select the winners. The panel of Judges after evaluating all the 24 paintings at length gave the following results:

Winner: Avinay Chettri, St. Xavier’s School, Pakyong
Runner Up: Kiran Panchkoti, Namcheybong Secondary School

11th August 2017:

An Idea of organizing a quiz competition for Anganwadi Workers was conceived by the Block Development Officer with an objective of involving this very significant section of society in the observance of Freedom from Open Defecation Week. 43 Anganwadi Workers from across the Pakyong Block participated in an interesting quiz conducted by quizmaster Pranay Khatiwara of Wandering Souls of Sikkim at the Hall of Pakyong Gram Prasasan Kendra. CDPO, Pakyong, Shri Samdup Tshering Bhutia graced the event along with his team of Supervisors, Panchayat President Smt. Januka Dhakal of Pakyong GPU, GPK functionaries and others. Ms. Jyoti Sharma of Damlakha Anganwadi Centre stood victorious in this unique quiz competition followed by Ms. Tika Devi Khatiwara of Dikling Daragaon Anganwadi Centre in the second position.

12th August 2017:

Preliminary and Second Stages of the Inter School Quiz Competition was held at the Hall of Pakyong Gram Prasasan Kendra. Students studying in classes 9-12 participated in the competition. 10 schools from around the Block took part in the Preliminary Round in which teams were made to answer 30 questions in 45 minutes in a written format. After the evaluation of performances in the preliminary round, 8 teams moved to the Second Stage. 2 groups of 4 teams each were formed and an interesting quiz of both the groups were conducted by Quizmaster Pranay Khatiwara. Of the 4 teams in each group, 2 best teams per group were selected to participate in the finale. Those moving to the Finale were the teams from Dikling Senior Secondary School, Mamring Senior Secondary School, St Xavier’s School and Puspanjali Vidyalaya. The event was attended by AEO, HRDD, Pakyong BAC along with his team, Pakyong GPU President Januka Dhakal along with her team, teachers, students and others.

Inter College Scholastic Competition organised by WSOS

The Events Scheduled for 13th August and 14th August couldn’t be conducted due to preoccupation of schools in the Independence Day Celebrations and were postponed to 22nd August 2017.

22nd August 2017:

Inter School Elocution Competition for Senior Secondary Level students on the theme “Sikkim’s Sanitation success and ideas to sustain it” was held in which 6 students from all the 3 Senior Secondary Schools of Pakyong Block participated. Panel of Judges comprising of Additional District Collector (Development), Pakyong Ms. Roshni Rai and PI, ADC(Dev), Pakyong Shri Sunil Pradhan, after an in depth analysis of the performances delivered the following results:

Winner: Kunshang Lamu Tamang, St. Xavier’s School
Runner Up: Shaniwa Rai, St. Xavier’s School

The Finale of Inter School Quiz competition was held in which after an interesting and intense quizzing of about 2 hours conducted by Quizmaster Pranay Khatiwara, Chandra Mani Dahal and Satish Sharma of Wandering Souls of Sikkim, team from Dikling Senior Secondary School comprising of Nitesh Bhusal and Indra Bahadur Chettri emerged victorious followed by the team comprising of Ritika Kafley and Deepika Sharma from St. Xavier’s School in the second position and the team from Puspanjali Vidyalaya and Mamring Senior Secondary School in the third and fourth positions respectively.

After the completion of these two interesting events, prizes and certificates to the winners of all the competitions held during the Freedom from Open Defecation Week were presented by the Chief Guest Smt. Januka Dhakal, President, Pakyong GPU and Special Guests ADC(Dev), Pakyong Ms Roshni Rai, BDO, Pakyong Shri Chiran Rizal, PI, ADC(Dev), Pakyong, Shri Sunil Pradhan and other guests. A Certificate of appreciation was presented to Bharat Scouts and Guides of Dikling School for participating in the Bajar Walk.

Bamboo dustbins, idea of which was specially conceived by the Block Development Officer were launched and distributed to be installed in and around Pakyong during the function.

Block Administrative Centre, Pakyong and Wandering Souls of Sikkim is indebted by the support and cooperation of the office of the ADC(Dev), office of the CDPO, HRDD officials, Members of the panel of Judges, Participating Schools, Participants, Functionaries of the Pakyong Gram Prasasan Kendra and all others who supported us in successfully coordinating and conducting the event.

Several Local and Regional Dailies and News Portals in social media have given prominent spaces to these events and have published reports with photographs. Also the events were given wide publicity through the Facebook page of Wandering Souls of Sikkim .
